Variables

Placeholders you can use in welcome, goodbye, vanity and server tag messages.

Overview

Several message-based modules accept placeholder variables that get replaced with real values when the message is sent. The exact set of variables differs slightly by module, run <module> variables in Discord (for example welcome variables) to see the live list for that module.

Welcome

VariableDescriptionExample
{user.mention}Pings the user@John
{user.name}Username (no discriminator)john
{user.id}User's Discord ID123456789012345678
{user.display_name}Display name or usernameJohnny
{user.avatar}Avatar URL, usable in embed image fieldshttps://cdn.discordapp.com/...
{user.created_at}Account creation dateJanuary 1, 2020
{user.joined_at}Server join dateMarch 7, 2024
{server.name}Server nameMy Server
{server.id}Server ID987654321098765432
{server.member_count}Total member count1,234
{server.owner}Server owner's display nameAdminUser
{server.icon}Server icon URL, usable in embedshttps://cdn.discordapp.com/...

Goodbye

Goodbye supports every welcome variable above, plus one more:

VariableDescriptionExample
{user.roles}Roles the user had, excluding @everyoneAdmin, Member

Vanity & Server Tag

The vanity and servertag reward messages (see Vanity & Booster Roles) use their own, smaller variable set, distinct from welcome and goodbye:

VariableDescription
{user.mention}Pings the user.
{username}The user's username.
{user.id}User's Discord ID.
{user.display_name}Display name or username.
{user.avatar}Avatar URL, usable in embed image fields.
{server.icon}Server icon URL, usable in embeds.
{server.owner}Server owner's display name.
{server.member_count}Total member count.
{server.id}Server ID.
{server.name}Server name.
{account_age}How long ago the user's account was created.
Vanity and server tag use {username}, not {user.name}, and {account_age} instead of {user.created_at}. Copying a welcome message straight into a vanity message won't format correctly.

Variables That Return URLs

{user.avatar} and {server.icon} return image URLs, not text. Use them in an embed's thumbnail, image or author-icon field rather than in the message body, where they'd just print as a raw link.
